The Department of Animal Science is one of the pioneer departments of academic units established during the university’s inception on March 10, 2011. Alongside the Department of Animal Science, other departments like Agricultural Economics and Extension, Crop Science, Soil Science, Fisheries, and Aquaculture, as well as Forestry and Wildlife Management, were established simultaneously to provide a comprehensive approach to agricultural education and research.The philosophy of the Animal Science Department at the University, as described, reflects a commitment to practical and functional training for undergraduate students in various aspects of animal science. This philosophy underscores the department’s dedication to aligning its educational programs with the specific needs and aspirations of the people of Jigawa State and the broader national context. Several key elements can be inferred from this philosophy, which include;
- Practical and Functional Training: The department emphasizes hands-on and applied learning experiences for its undergraduate students. This approach suggests a focus on imparting practical skills and knowledge that are directly applicable in real-world settings.
- Comprehensive Coverage of Animal Science: The department aims to cover a broad spectrum of topics within the field of animal science. This includes areas such as animal nutrition, physiology, reproduction, genetics, health, and management. By providing a well-rounded education, students are equipped to address diverse challenges in the field.
- Local Relevance: The philosophy acknowledges the importance of tailoring the educational programs to the specific needs and aspirations of the people in Jigawa State. This implies an awareness of the local context, including agricultural practices, economic considerations, and societal needs. The department seeks to contribute directly to the development and improvement of animal husbandry practices in the region.
The commencement of academic activities in the Department of Animal Science in the 2011/2012 academic session marked the beginning of its journey towards providing education and training in the field. Starting with a few applicants, the department laid the foundation for growth and development.
