Department of Animal Science

The Department of Animal Science is one of the pioneer departments of academic units established during the university’s inception on March 10, 2011. Alongside the Department of Animal Science, other departments like Agricultural Economics and Extension, Crop Science, Soil Science, Fisheries, and Aquaculture, as well as Forestry and Wildlife Management, were established simultaneously to provide a comprehensive approach to agricultural education and research.The philosophy of the Animal Science Department at the University, as described, reflects a commitment to practical and functional training for undergraduate students in various aspects of animal science. This philosophy underscores the department’s dedication to aligning its educational programs with the specific needs and aspirations of the people of Jigawa State and the broader national context. The commencement of academic activities in the Department of Animal Science in the 2011/2012 academic session marked the beginning of its journey towards providing education and training in the field. Starting with a few applicants, the department laid the foundation for growth and development. Despite the modest beginnings, the commitment of the professional and dedicated staff played a crucial role in the department’s progress. The department graduated its first set of two students in the 2015/2016 academic session. The graduation of the first set of two students during the 2015/2016 academic session marked a significant milestone for the Animal Science Department, symbolizing its successful establishment and initiation of academic activities. Such achievement brought a sense of accomplishment to the faculty, staff, and students involved, laying the groundwork for the department’s continued growth and success.

The leadership history of the Department of Animal Science provides insight into the dynamic management and commitment to excellence within the department. The individuals who have served as heads of the department have played crucial roles in shaping its direction and contributing to its growth. Here is a summary of the leadership transitions:

Late Prof. A. U. Kibon (2011/2012 to 2014/2015): As the pioneer head of the department, Prof. A. U. Kibon played a pivotal role in establishing the academic and administrative foundations of the department during its early years.

Dr. Florence OkeOluwakemi (Acting Head, 2015/2016 to 2017/2018): Taking over as acting head, Dr. Florence Oluwakemi contributed to the department’s continuity and development. Her leadership during this period has involved navigating administrative challenges and ensuring the smooth operation of academic activities.

Dr. A. A. Ibrahim (Substantive Head, 2018/2019 to 2019/2020): As the substantive head, Dr. A. A. Ibrahim implemented strategic initiatives and furthered the department’s objectives. He had successfully achieved a lot during his tenure, where he witnessed developments in academic programs, research, and collaboration.

Dr. Salim Lawal Abdurrahaman (SubstantiveHead, 2020/2021 to 2021/2022): Dr. Salim LawalAbdurrahaman’s leadership has been involved in addressing challenges and contributing to the department’s growth through innovative programs, research initiatives, and collaborations.

Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim Muhammad (Substantive Head, 2022/2023): In his brief tenure, Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim Muhammad has continued the trajectory of the department’s growth, contributing to academic excellence and implementing new initiatives.

Dr. Ibrahim Bala Salisu (Acting Head, 2023/2024 to Present): Currently serving as the acting head, Dr. Ibrahim Bala Salisu is entrusted with the department’s leadership. His role involves overseeing day-to-day operations, fostering a positive learning environment, and implementing strategic plans for further departmental growth.

The department’s commitment to academic excellence is evident through its academic staff of various ranks and diverse specializations. Offering both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, including a Master’s in Animal Science.

In the near future, the department plans to introduce a PhD in Animal Science and a Postgraduate Diploma in Animal Health and Production. The introduction of these new programs will likely contribute to the department’s stature and further establish it as a center for excellence in animal science education and research.

I. Ordinary Level Requirements

Candidates seeking admission into 100 level B. Agriculture (Animal Science) five-year programmes should possess a minimum of Five credit passes at the GCE/SSCE of WAEC/NECO/NABTEB which must include English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Sciences/Animal Husbandry and either Physics/Economics/Geography.

II. UTME Combination

In addition to these requirements, the University requires that students make an acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in the following subject combinations; English, Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science and Physics/Mathematics. However, the University reserves the right to further screen students in addition to other requirements.

III. Advanced Level Requirements

Candidates seeking Direct Entry Admissions into 200 level B. Agriculture (Animal Science) four-year programmes should possess at least two relevant subjects (Biology, Chemistry) at the Advanced Level GCE/IJMB. Students with two relevant subjects at the NCE (Agriculture Double Major) at merit level, or ND/HND (Animal Production Technology) with a minimum of Lower Credit from recognized institutions are accepted provided that they have satisfied all Matriculation requirements.
