Name: Dr. Nura Umar Kura

Dr. Nura Umar Kura was born in Kaduna, North Western Nigeria. He obtained his secondary certificate at Nagarta College Sokoto (Nigeria) in 1996. He obtained a BSc degree in Geography at the Bayero University Kano (Nigeria) in 2002, and then a post-graduate diploma and Masters in Environmental Management in 2006 and 2008 at Bayero University Kano, respectively.
In January 2015, he was awarded a PhD in the field of Environmental Analysis and Modeling, Universiti Putra Malaysia under the supervision of Associate Professor Dr. Mohammad Firuz Ramli. Currently, he is the Head of Department, Department of Environmental Sciences of the Federal University Dutse.
With over 30 published research articles and more than 650 citations globally, Dr. Kura has research interests in modeling and assessment of environmental phenomenon ranging from prediction to mitigation and remediation measures, quantitative and qualitative assessment of water resources (hydrology, hydrogeology, and hydrochemistry), Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and pollution control, geophysics, geochemistry, applied GIS and Remote Sensing, Climate Change as well as Statistical analysis. Some of the tools he is familiar with include ArcGIS, R programming language, IDRISIS, Surfer, SPSS, XLSTART, Res2Dinv, Groundwater Modeling System (GMS), VISTA software, (MODFLOW), Surface water Modeling System (SMS), GW Chart, Aqua-chem, and Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS).
The mission of the Department of Environmental Sciences is “to offer a nationally-recognized top tier degree, where diverse student body will be empowered, through science-intensive and multi-disciplinary active learning instruction leading to productive contributions towards solving environmental challenges locally, nationally, regionally and globally.”
The Department is one of the seven Departments that make up the Faculty of Science. It was established in April 2012 as one of the pioneering Departments of the Federal University Dutse but did not admit students until the 2012/2013 academic session. The Department is expected to train students for the award of Bachelor Degree (B. Hons) in Environmental Management and Toxicology.
The Department has graduated 6 sets of graduates as of the end of the 2022/2023 Academic Session and has a total of 408 students currently undergoing their undergraduate studies. It has 34 Teaching Staff, 16 Technical Staff, and 4 Administrative Staff. The Teaching Staff consists of 1 Professor, 17 Senior Lecturers, 8 Lecturers, 6 Lecturer IIs, 1 Assistant Lecturer, and 1 Graduate Assistant. In total, from the published research articles of the Teaching Staff, the Department has over 500 publications in local and international journals.
Presently, the Department has applied for Resource Verification to the National University Commission (NUC) for approval to commence postgraduate studies.
Admission into the programme may be through any of the following modes:
UTME: Candidates who have successfully completed the Senior Secondary School certificate (WAEC or NECO) or its equivalent and obtained five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Geography and Biology or Agricultural Science in not more than two sittings, and candidates must also have at-least a pass in Physics to be admitted to 100 level of the programme. However, candidates must score the minimum cut-off points specified by JAMB and also passed the post UTME examination of the Federal University, Dutse.
UTME (JAMB) SUBJECT COMBINATION: English, Chemistry, Biology and either Mathematics, Geography or Physics.
DIRECT ENTRY: Candidates who fulfills the above requirements and who have obtained G.C.E Advanced Level, I.J.M.B, NCE-Minimum of Credit Pass or OND-minimum of Lower Credit (i.e. a total minimum score for admission is 8 points). The NCE and OND courses are those with bias in applied Sciences to be admitted to the level 200 of the programme (depending on available quota).
SPECIAL ADMISSION: A candidate who fulfills basic admission requirements (in SSCE examinations) and in addition holds an HND certificate with bias in applied Sciences (with a minimum upper credit) e.g. in Health Technology, Agriculture and any other related fields that the university deem as relevant may be considered for admission into the level 300 of the programme. However, such candidates will finally be admitted after sitting and passing an aptitude test conducted by the department.
TRANSFER CASES: Candidates wishing to transfer from one programme to Environmental Management and Toxicology for some good reason(s) as approved by the University Senate may be considered for absorption at the appropriate level (levels 100, 200 or 300). Any deficiencies in their background should be rectified by taking appropriate courses.
QUALIFICATION TO HOLD A BACHELOR DEGREE IN ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND TOXICOLOGY:
To qualify for the award of the degree of Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Management and Toxicology, a student:
- Must have spent a minimum of 3, 4, or 5 years on the programme depending on the year of entry.
- Must have passed all the University Compulsory courses.
- Must have passed all Department and Faculty Core courses and required electives.
- Should not have spent more than two years over the prescribed minimum periods for the award of the degree.
- Should not have less than a CGPA of 1.0 at the end of the programme.
