Dr. MUSA IBRAHIM SAULAWA
Position: Head of Department
Dr. Musa Ibrahim Saulawa is a Senior Lecturer who assumed the headship of the department in February 2023; making him the third substantive Head of the Department. He graduated from Bayero University, Kano medical school in the year 2013. He did his internship at the Federal Medical Centre, Katsina in the year 2013-2014 and the mandatory one-year service (NYSC) at the University Health Center of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina in 2014-2015.
Musa furthered his education by obtaining an MSc in Public Health (2016) and a PhD in Public Health (2022), both from the University of Bedfordshire, United Kingdom. He has over a decade of clinical experience (in different settings and systems, both within and outside Nigeria). He also has nearly eight years of experience in public health ranging from teaching, fieldwork, and research.
His research interests include the epidemiology of non-communicable diseases (especially obesity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancers), the application of Artificial intelligence in health, life course epidemiology, and social inequalities in health.
Dr Musa has authored several articles both in local and international journals. He also attended several scientific conferences and serves as a reviewer for many journals. He is a member of various professional bodies including the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH), Royal Statistical Society (RSS), Higher Education Academy (HEA), and Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM).
Federal University Dutse was established and opened in February 2011 to complement the provision of much-needed high-level manpower skills in Northern Nigeria. This is expected to bring about socio-economic development thereby eradicating the poverty level as we are witnessing today. In view of this, the establishment of academic programs in Medical and Allied Medical Sciences became necessary which led to the preparation of establishing the College of Medicine and Health Sciences. These were approved by the senate of the university in 2015. Subsequently, in 2016, the senate considered and approved the curriculum of the programs in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences including the MB; BS program, and now the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences and Faculty of Clinical Sciences.
The Department of Community Medicine is one of the fundamental departments in the College of Medical Sciences, FUD, assessed by both the Nigerian University Commission (NUC) and the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). With the successful commencement of the MBBS degree in the 2017/2018 academic session, the department has since commenced the teaching of undergraduate medical students. The department has selected Chamo Primary Health Care Centre for the rural posting and Kiyawa General Hospital for the urban posting. With Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital in place, the department will play a vital role in training Resident Doctors and Community Health Officers, attracting grants in primary clinical care as well as running clinics for Tuberculosis and HIV (DOTS, ART), Immunization/Child welfare clinic, Maternal and Health services, Wellness clinic, Research clinic among others.
To be one of the best leaders in teaching/mentoring, evidence-based research, community services, and producing community-oriented Doctors and Health Care Workers in the Country and the West African sub-region.
To provide excellence in medical education, community/public health research, and improving the quality of life of the good people of Jigawa State/Nigerians and the West African sub-region at large, and also by producing community oriented Health Care Workers and translating community/public health research into practice.
