NAME: DR. IBRAHIM AHMAD MUHAMMAD (MCIB, FIBAKM, FCBA, FCKM, Ph.D.)
Title(s)/Position: Head of Department
Dr. Ahmed Ibrahim Mohammed is a Senior lecturer and the current Head of the Banking and Finance Department. Dr. Ibrahim was born on 15th April 1973 in the blessed family of Alhaji Muhammad Inuwa Namandawari a son of Malam Muhammad Manna of Kofar Gabas Tariwa ward, Bebeji local government in Kano State, Nigeria. On completion of both Primary and Islamiya Schools with the first Certificates, Dr. Ibrahim proceeded to Government Secondary School Kaduna and obtained a Certificate from the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC). Dr. Ibrahim was admitted to Kaduna State Polytechnic, Zaria to enroll Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. On passing the said examination (IJMB), Dr. Ibrahim proceeded to Bayero University Kano and obtained his first Degree in Economics and Education. He had undergone the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a Classroom Teacher in Wukari, Taraba State.
Dr. Ibrahim obtained his Master‘s Degree in Banking and Finance from Bayero University, Kano, and an advanced diploma in Local Government Administration from the University of Maiduguri. Dr. Ibrahim finally bagged a Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D.) in Economics and Islamic Finance from the University of Utara Malaysia. He is a scholar in modern social and management sciences in the fields of financial management, Economics, Entrepreneurship, and Agriculture/Agribusiness; Islamic Economics, Banking, and Finance with more than 40 published articles in both National and International Academic Journals including Scopus of the high index. He also presented more than 20 papers and so many workshops in local and International Seminars/Symposium and Conferences in both conventional and Non-Interest financial management/inclusions. He is currently a Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (MCIB) and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) (MNIM). He obtained a Certificate in Computer Operations from Bayero University Kano and a certificate in PLS, SPSS, and Excel tools for software modern academic research analysis from University Utara Malaysia. He was a Part-Time lecturer with the Federal College of Education, Kano. Dr. Ibrahim was the former Departmental Examination officer and is currently the Head of the Department of Banking and Finance at the Federal University Dutse, Jigawa State. He taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels of degrees.
Dr. Ibrahim is currently the Chairman and member in so many Committees in the Federal University Dutse. He presented and awarded with the Certificate of Honour in the Seminar Mu’amalat Milenia at the University Utara Malaysia as well as awarded a Certificate of Honour from the Vice Chancellor Bayero University Kano; Certificate of Honour by Chiranci Literary Forum, Kano; Certificate of Honour by Al-Iman School Wukari, Taraba State; Meritorious Certificate of Service by Federal Road Safety Cadet; Certificate of Honour by SALKA Media Communication Service, Kano; Certificate of Honour by Tariwa Students Association, Bebeji L.G, Kano State. Dr. Ibrahim is passionate about the propagating of Islamic Economics and Finance, Entrepreneurship studies/skills, scientific research work, Monetary and Fiscal Policy, and Micro and Macro-economic Analysis in Nigeria and around the Globe. He has one wife and children.
The Department of Banking & Finance was established in 2018 following the creation of the Faculty of Management Sciences, at Federal University Dutse. The Department offers One Undergraduate Degree with specializations in both Conventional and Islamic Banking & Finance; a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Banking & Finance, and a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Islamic Banking & Finance. Furthermore, the Department is in the process of commencing a Post Graduate Diploma and Professional Masters/Master of Science (M.Sc) in Banking & Finance as well as Doctor of Philosophy in both Conventional and Islamic Banking & Finance.
The Department serves as an academic gateway for understanding how the Financial System operates within all two distinct yet related areas of banking & finance. The tremendous opportunity for one to pursue an advanced study in a core specialty within the diverse areas of banking and finance is guaranteed. This has been made possible by a pool of experts with diverse expertise as well as good support facilities.
It provides a conducive academic environment for promoting research and development among its academic staff and postgraduate students. The Department is on the verge of launching its Departmental Journal.
MISSION STATEMENT
To produce intellectually, technically, and ethically sound Banking and Finance graduates who can give selfless, competent, and value-adding services to society and who are capable of qualifying as professional bankers and financers with specialization in either Conventional or Islamic Banking and Finance (B.Sc. Banking and Finance or B.Sc. Islamic Banking and Finance), through a team of very dedicated staff, who place a high premium on research and effective teaching.
GOAL STATEMENT
The Department aspires to be one of the foremost Banking and Finance Departments in Africa and the aspiration of every scholar in the field of Banking and Finance.
PROGRAMME PHILOSOPHY
Using state-of-the-art Internet and Communication Technology (ICT) capabilities to leverage and overcome limits in the Banking and Finance environment by striving to see beyond the immediate problem, condition, or event, and perceive the long-term challenges in terms of interest rate as well as opportunities in the Banking and Finance scholarship and industry.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR DEGREE PROGRAMME
The B.Sc. Banking & Finance programme is a four-year degree programme comprising two specializations; Islamic Banking Option (IBO) and Conventional Banking Option (CBO) designed for candidates with at least five (5) ordinary-level credits (including English, Mathematics, Economics, and two other relevant subjects) or with equivalent qualifications.
- UTME: Candidates who wish to be enrolled in the programme must have obtained five (5) 0-level credits including English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any other two subjects at the SSCE, NECO, GCE, or equivalent at not more than two sittings.
- Direct Entry (DE): Candidates for Direct Entry admission shall possess five credits in the SSCE, NECO, or GCE as contained in (i) above or equivalent. Holders of National Diploma (ND) in Finance, Banking, Business Administration, Accounting, and other relevant courses from recognized institutions may be considered for level II admission, if they have at least an upper credit grade and have satisfied the English Language and Mathematics requirements.
- Diploma holders must have a minimum of lower credit or merit passes in relevant courses.
- Higher National Diploma (HND) in relevant discipline with at least lower credit in addition to five credit passes as in (i and ii) above.
- Final certificate of relevant Professional Bodies in addition to five credit passes as in (i and ii) above.
In all cases, candidates for admission into the programme (B.Sc. Banking and Finance) must satisfy the general regulations governing admission into the University.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
As provided for in the general objectives and admission requirements, the product of this programme should acquire and be able to apply banking and financial knowledge in the operation and management of banks, financial institutions, and other organizations and be professionally qualified to practice the professions.
To graduate, a student must have:
- Completed and passed at least the following number of units at each level
- 100 Level – 47 for any option
- 200 Level – 45 for any option
- 300 Level – 37 for IBO and 36 for CBO
- Level – 36 for IBO and 35 for CBO
- Completed and met the requirements for core, elective, and prerequisite courses
- Obtained a minimum CGPA of 1.5 on a 5-point scale grading system.
- Met other requirements that may be prescribed by the Department, Faculty, or the University Senate.

- To be awarded a B.Sc. Banking and Finance Degree, a student must earn the following credit units:
- Four (4) year degree program: 165 credit units and 163 credit units for IBO and CBO respectively.
- Three (3) year degree program: 118 credit units and 116 credit units for IBO and CBO respectively.
- Complete and meet the standards for all required and optional courses.
- Obtain a minimum CGPA of 1.50 on a scale of 5.00
- Meet other requirements that may be prescribed by the Department, Faculty, and Senate.
