He holds a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Usman Danfodio University Sokoto in 1991, a Master&#8217;s degree in Zoology (Fisheries) from Bayero University Kano in 1996, another Master&#8217;s degree in Fisheries Management and Aquaculture from Usman Danfodio University Sokoto in 2014, and a Ph.D. in Fisheries from Usman Danfodio University Sokoto in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Haruna\u2019s academic journey began when he was posted to a school in Rivers State for his NYSC in 1991, and later worked at Government Day Girls Secondary School \u2018Yar Gaya, Kano, as Education Officer vii in 1994. He has been in the tertiary education system since 1997 when he joined the services of Audu Bako College of Agriculture Dambatta, Kano, as Lecturer III, and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil in 2005 as Lecturer I.<\/p>\n<p>While at Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta, and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, he served as a member on several committees at departmental, faculty and university levels such as member, Governing Council, Research Committee, Appointment and Promotion Committee, Faculty Research and Higher Degree Committee, and as Chairman of others such as the Supply and Purchasing Committee. He also served as a Level Coordinator, Admission Officer, SIWES Coordinator, Examination Officer, Project Coordinator, Seminar Coordinator, Head of Department, to mention but a few.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Haruna later joined the services of Federal University Dutse as a Lecturer I in the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture in 2014, where he gradually rose through the ranks to become an Associate Professor in 2021. He also held many administrative responsibilities in the university. His most recent appointments include Deputy Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, and Head of Department, Fisheries and Aquaculture, a position he held since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Haruna has taught a diverse range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses and supervised several undergraduate projects and postgraduate dissertations. He has served as an external examiner at the Masters and Ph.D. levels, a visiting senior lecturer at SuleLamido University Kafin-Hausa, and a visiting Associate Professor at Federal University Gashu\u2019a and Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology. He has published a multitude of original peer-reviewed articles in both international and local journals. He has served as a reviewer for many academic and professional journals for several years. He has also attended numerous workshops and training sessions.<\/p>\n<p>His commitment to academic excellence is further demonstrated through his involvement in various professional bodies such as the Association of Nigerian Fisheries Scientists (ANIFS), Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON), Association for Aquatic Sciences of Nigeria (AASN), and Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP), where he actively contributes to the growth and development of the academic community.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past three decades, Dr. Haruna has offered professional consultancy services in Fisheries and Aquaculture to numerous individuals and organizations. Additionally, he served as Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Audu Bako College of Agriculture, Dambatta Chapter from 2003 to 2005. Furthermore, he held the positions of Chief Superintendent and State Administrative Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Kano State Command from 1999 to 2003.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;History&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1620740681674-a684d821-be32&#8243;][vc_column_text]<strong>HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture was established in 2013\/2014 academic session with the initial enrolment of 18 students. The department secured its first full accreditation in 2017 and graduated her first set of seven students during 2017\/2018 academic session with one first class, four second class upper and two second class lower divisions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Philosophy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bachelor of Fisheries and Aquaculture programme at the University is aimed at producing high level manpower, competent in theory and practice; for effective, efficient, and sustainable development. Graduates will be equipped with effective management skills in all aspects of aquaculture husbandry practices, capture fisheries, fisheries management, fish post-harvest technology and marketing, etc. This will enable them to meet the manpower needs of the public and private fisheries and aquaculture establishments in the country and beyond. In addition, the programme is designed to engage in meaningful collaborative research nationally and internationally to enhance the socio-economic well-being of local fisher folks and fish farmers within and outside the country.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The objectives of the programme are to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Promote the advancement of learning in the field of aquaculture and fisheries through the provision of high-standard education.<\/li>\n<li>Produce graduates who can contribute effectively to the development of aquaculture and fisheries to profitably use the acquired knowledge and entrepreneurial skills to establish and operate their own fish farms in Jigawa State, any part of the country and beyond.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>iii.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Train students with adequate technical skills in aquaculture and fisheries, who can be gainfully, employed in private aquaculture and fisheries establishments in Nigeria and beyond.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Develop an aquaculture and fisheries centre of excellence for teaching and research in the following areas;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Indigenous fish stocks<\/li>\n<li>Improved fish farming methods (Re-circulatory aquaculture system, Aquaponics and integrated aquaculture system)<\/li>\n<li>Fish seed and feed production,<\/li>\n<li>Low-cost fish pond construction and management,<\/li>\n<li>Improved fish processing, preservation, storage and packaging techniques that would reduce post-harvest losses and increase the market value of fish and fisheries products.<\/li>\n<li>Value additions to fish and fisheries products,<\/li>\n<li>Imparting knowledge of improved technologies to traditional fisheries artisans.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Admission Requirement&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1620741868145-990ccf0a-4e38&#8243;][vc_column_text]<strong>ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>All candidates for admission into the Faculty of Agriculture must be at least sixteen (16) years old. The admission requirement for application to study B. Fisheries &amp; Aquaculture is in line with the criteria of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB). In general, candidates seeking 100-level admission into the faculty\u2019s five-year programme leading to the award of a B.
