WHAT IS EXTENSION OUTREACH?
Extension outreach is a programme of activities initiated and designed to meet the information needs of an un-served or inadequately to focus on the needs of specific segments of a population, the right support can be made available to them at the right time.
The 13th Senate meeting of September 24, 2014, approved the establishment of the Federal University Dutse Agricultural Extension Outreach Centre, [AEOC], as an innovative and emerging institution for evolving strategies and approaches for accelerating agriculture and rural development through action-research, training and demonstration in model villages called the social laboratory.
What is Action-Research Social Laboratory?
Part of the responsibility of the University is to extend practical knowledge acquired from research and teachings to the local communities. By this effort, the university is promoting collaboration and development by bringing together the ‘town and gown’. the Social Laboratory Action-Research will serve as centre of excellence for the development of experiential learning for sustainable agriculture and rural development in our Model Villages termed the Social Laboratory where proven technologies will be tried using individual farmers, households, and communities, the Social Laboratory will create a clear information sharing system on knowledge in agriculture, home economics, family health and environmental protection issues as well as in poverty reduction.
Intrinsic and Extrinsic Benefits
The Outreach Centre will stimulate understanding among stakeholders including the farmers, youth, farmers groups, ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, State-wide Agricultural Development Programmes, River Basin Authorities, Research Institutes, Development agencies and NGOs. The Centre will also create ‘hands-on’ experiential learning useful to our academic staff, for teaching students and farmers. It would be of immediate and direct benefit to the university community.
